MORTICE CHOPPING! Eilean is using a firmer chisel MORTICE CHOPPING! Eilean is using a firmer chisel and a mallet to chop out the majority of the waste wood from these mortices. The mortices are shallow, so heavier mortice chisels are not necessary for this task. This beautiful bedside table is made entirely by hand from solid ash timber with mitred corners, a dovetailed drawer and a door made with stopped haunched mortice and tenon joints. Due to concerns around the sustainability of mahogany timber, we cut tiny sections from old reclaimed mahogany floorboards to make the lid tabs for our level 2 lidded box project. The dark accent looks great against the pink of the Red Grandis used to make the box itself. After all the investment of time spent marking, sawing, chiseling and planing to create accurate toolbox components, you'll want to make sure that everything lines up and and your toolbox is square. Our tutors will show you how to position and use your clamps to get a strong glue bond and well fitted joinery! Made from reclaimed pine boards using wide comb joints in the box corners and doweled mitres joints in the lid, this was a super quick and super useful project to make. Clare comes to the Thursday daytime classes - a small group of mixed level woodworkers where we can accommodate any level of learning from level 1 beginners all the way through to rent-a-bench members. ROUTER PLANES! Our level 2 cabinet project involv ROUTER PLANES! Our level 2 cabinet project involves making a paneled door using stopped haunched mortice and tenon joints in all four corners. We use small router planes to level the cheeks of the tenons and take them down to the final thickness during fitting. MITRES! Michael is making a bedside table from as MITRES! Michael is making a bedside table from ash using mitre joints at the top corners. Mitres are simple to make and allow for a continuous run of the grain pattern around corners but the 45 degree cuts need to be very accurate so that the two sides touch and the glue can hold them together. BEGINNERS LEVEL 1 & 2! Congratulations Stuart on BEGINNERS LEVEL 1 & 2! Congratulations Stuart on finishing both your Woodwork for Beginners Level 1 toolbox and Level 2 lidded box. Having mastered the basics of accurate hand tool use in level 1, Stuart applied his skills to the more challenging joinery of the level 2 project and ended up with fantastic results! Stuart made both of his boxes in our Friday daytime classes - taking 4 days for the toolbox and 6 days for the lidded box. These classes can be booked individually to suit your diary and as part of a mixed level group, progress is at your speed.
