TOOLS FOR SELF-RELIANCE! I visited the Bristol Tools for Self-Reliance volunteer group yesterday. They collect and recondition all sort of hand tools to be shipped to groups in Africa giving training and support to enable people to rebuild their lives and become self-reliant! Due to issues shipping to Africa currently they have a surplus of carpentry tools and would welcome an approach by anyone with limited funds looking to set themselves up to woodwork and put the tools to good use. LEVEL 2 BOXES ROUND_UP! Thanks and congratulations to all of these level 2 finishers from various times throughout 2024. To Joe, Mark, Felipe, Beryl, Mark, Tom, Richard, Patrick, Henry, Kris, Tim and Martin! The lidded box is a challenging project that focuses on accuracy using only hand tools to produce a beautiful little box with hand cut dovetails, mortice and tenon and other joinery. The mortices are shallow, so heavier mortice chisels are not necessary for this task. This beautiful bedside table is made entirely by hand from solid ash timber with mitred corners, a dovetailed drawer and a door made with stopped haunched mortice and tenon joints. RECLAIMED MAHOGANY! Due to concerns around the sustainability of mahogany timber, we cut tiny sections from old reclaimed mahogany floorboards to make the lid tabs for our level 2 lidded box project.
The dark accent looks great against the pink of the Red Grandis used to make the box itself. Here, Sophie is getting ready to mark out and chisel the lid tab rebate.

After all the investment of time spent marking, sawing, chiseling and planing to create accurate toolbox components, you'll want to make sure that everything lines up and and your toolbox is square. Made from reclaimed pine boards using wide comb joints in the box corners and doweled mitres joints in the lid, this was a super quick and super useful project to make. Clare comes to the Thursday daytime classes - a small group of mixed level woodworkers where we can accommodate any level of learning from level 1 beginners all the way through to rent-a-bench members. ROUTER PLANES! Our level 2 cabinet project involves making a paneled door using stopped haunched mortice and tenon joints in all four corners. We use small router planes to level the cheeks of the tenons and take them down to the final thickness during fitting. MITRES! Michael is making a bedside table from ash using mitre joints at the top corners. Mitres are simple to make and allow for a continuous run of the grain pattern around corners but the 45 degree cuts need to be very accurate so that the two sides touch and the glue can hold them together.
